Ecomap template
This page has four blank ecomap templates, an empty one with twelve unlabeled circles and one each for a family, a child or teen and an adult, each as a PDF, a Word file and a PNG. It also has two filled templates and a printable ecomap key, and you can open every template except the empty one in the free ecomap maker.

Blank ecomap templates
The empty template has a center circle and twelve unlabeled circles for any mix of systems, and the other three have eight system circles with their category labels. The lines are left for you to draw, and beside each map is a key with the four line types, the energy flows and any categories used on that template. Each Word file contains the template as one page image to print and write on.

Print the ecomap key

The printable ecomap key is one page with every line type, every energy flow and all twelve system categories from the free ecomap maker, to keep beside a map you draw by hand.
Fill in a template in the browser
In the free ecomap maker, the circles of a template are already placed, so you only draw the lines, and when you drag a circle later its lines move with it. You can export the finished ecomap as a PNG or PDF with a small Genogram Pro badge.
Common mistakes on a printed ecomap
A weak tie drawn as a plain line
A plain solid line is read as Normal, so a tenuous tie looks steadier than it is. Draw that tie as a dashed Weak line.
A map without its key

Without a key, a reader has to guess what a hatched line or a double arrow means. Each template here is printed with its key beside the map, so keep the key on the page when you copy or scan it.
Questions people ask
Is there an ecomap template in Word?
Yes, there is a Word file for each of the four blank templates. In Word the template is a single full-page image, so you can print it and fill it in by hand, but you cannot move the circles or edit the labels.
Are these ecomap templates free?
Yes. The PDF, Word and PNG downloads are free, and you can use the free ecomap maker without an account. PNG and PDF exports from the maker have a small Genogram Pro badge.
What should an ecomap template include?
An ecomap template needs a center for the person or household, a key for the line types and energy flow arrows, and a circle for each system in their life, such as family, work, school or health care. Each template here has all three, with room between the center and the circles for the lines.
How do I draw an ecomap in Word?
You can draw the center and the systems with Word's circle shapes, join them with line shapes and format each line as thick, solid or dashed. Word has no hatched line style for a stressful tie, so you add the cross marks by hand, and moving a circle later usually means redrawing its lines. In the free ecomap maker, the lines are attached to the circles, and the key is built from the lines and circles on the map.
Open the free ecomap makerIs there a template for a child's ecomap?
Yes. The blank child template has a child or teen at the center and circles for family, school, friends, extended family, health care, recreation, online and digital life and social services. For a filled example, see the ecomap for a child in foster care.
