How to use a blank genogram template

  1. Open the template in the editor, or print the PDF.
  2. Rename each role, starting with the index person.
  3. Add or remove siblings, partners and grandparents with the quick-add buttons.
  4. Mark divorces, cohabitation and emotional bonds on the lines.
  5. Add medical conditions; the key updates itself.
  6. Click auto-arrange, then export as PNG or PDF.

Is there a free genogram template?
Yes. All three blank templates on this page are free to download as PDF, PNG and Word files, and the two structural templates open free in the browser editor with no account. Exports from the free editor carry a small Made with Genogram Pro badge.
Is there a genogram template in Word?
Word has no genogram shapes, so a native Word template is a page of squares, circles and lines you drag by hand. The DOCX files here place the blank template on a page so you can annotate over it or paste it into a report. To change the structure itself, open the template in the editor and export a new image.
How do you create a simple genogram?
Start with three rows: grandparents at the top, parents in the middle, children (including the index person) at the bottom. Join each couple with a horizontal line, hang children from that line in birth order left to right, and add a key. The blank 3 generation template already has that skeleton, so you only rename the roles.
What should a 3 generation genogram template include?
Both sets of grandparents, the parents and their siblings, and the index person with their siblings, each couple joined by a partnership line and each child connected to it. Add the index person’s partner and children if the assignment centres on your own household. Dates, medical conditions and emotional bonds come after the structure.
Why is there no gallery of template styles?
Genogram notation is a standard, not a style. The editor draws every symbol the same way McGoldrick and Gerson define it, and the key is generated for you, so the only thing a template needs to give you is the structure.
