Arranging the canvas

Keep a growing genogram readable: arrange it automatically, move around it, and use the Genogram key to keep track of what every symbol means.

Auto-arrange

Select Auto-arrange in the right panel to lay out the whole diagram at once. It applies these rules:

  1. Each generation goes on its own row, oldest at the top.
  2. In a couple, the male partner goes left of the female.
  3. Children sit below their parents’ couple line, ordered by birth date.
  4. Divorced or separated partners are placed on opposite sides so fewer lines cross.

If you don’t like the result, undo it (Ctrl + Z).

Move, zoom, and select

  • Pan - the Hand tool (H), a middle-mouse drag, or dragging an empty part of the canvas
  • Zoom - the scroll wheel, a trackpad pinch, the zoom controls, or Ctrl + + and Ctrl + -
  • Select - click an item, Shift-click to add more, or drag a box around several. Press Delete or ⌫ to remove the selection.

Find people with the Genogram key

Select Genogram key in the right panel to open a legend of everything in the diagram: person symbols, relationship lines, emotional bonds, and conditions. Select a row to highlight the matching elements on the canvas, a quick way to find every person with a given condition. The key’s menu can show counts next to each item and include the legend in exports.
