Your master password
Genogram Pro encrypts your data end to end. Your master password is the key that unlocks it, and only you hold it.
How encryption works
Genogram Pro encrypts your data on your device before it is stored, so our servers only ever hold ciphertext. Your master password unlocks a master key, and that key encrypts each genogram, template, and share. The password, the master key and your recovery phrase never reach our servers.
You set the password the first time you need it, then enter it to unlock your data on a new device or browser.
Save your recovery phrase
Right after you set your master password, Genogram Pro shows a recovery phrase of 12 words. Download it as a recovery codes PDF or copy it, and keep it in a password manager or a locked drawer. You can use it to reset your master password if you forget it. Your account has one recovery phrase at a time.
If you skipped it, open Settings, go to Account, and select Add phrase. To make a new one, select Replace phrase there, and your old phrase stops working.
Reset a forgotten password
We never see your master password, so we can't reset it for you. You can reset it yourself with your recovery phrase or a trusted device. Either way your genograms, shares and trusted devices stay as they are.
With your recovery phrase
- Sign in, and on the unlock screen select Forgot password?
- Choose Use my recovery phrase.
- Paste the 12 words or drop your recovery codes PDF, then select Continue.
- Set a new master password.
- Save the new recovery phrase that appears.
A phrase works for one reset. After you reset, your old phrase stops working, so save the new one.
With a trusted device
If Genogram Pro still opens without a password on one of your trusted devices, open Settings there, go to Account, and select Change password. You don't need the old password.
Change your password
- Open the account menu from your avatar (top right) and choose Settings.
- On the Account tab, find Master password and select Change password.
- Enter your new password twice and save it.
Changing the password re-wraps the same master key, so your genograms are not re-encrypted and your trusted devices stay signed in.
Skip the password on trusted devices
Mark a device as trusted so you do not type your master password every visit. Trusted devices unlock your data without re-entering it, and each gets its own key. Review and remove them on the Devices tab in Settings, and remove any device you no longer use.
