Importing & templates
Bring existing family data into Genogram Pro, and reuse your own structures with templates and ready-made examples.
Import a file
Open the editor menu and choose Import. Importing always creates a new genogram and opens it. It never merges into the one you have open. Two file types are supported:
- .genogrampro - the native format. Restores the whole diagram, including emotional bonds, households, notes, and medical conditions.
- GEDCOM - the standard genealogy format. Brings in people, sex, birth and death dates, and family relationships, and auto-arranges them. GEDCOM has no concept of emotional bonds, medical conditions, households, or notes, so those come in empty.
To create either file, see Exporting.
Reuse a structure with templates
A template is a reusable starting point. Templates have their own tab on the dashboard. To save one, choose Save as template from the editor menu, or from the three-dot menu of a genogram on the dashboard. The preview shows what will be saved, with personal information removed unless you turn that off. To use a template, choose New genogram and pick it on the Templates tab, and its structure is copied into a new genogram for you to fill out. Clicking a template on the dashboard opens it for editing, and New genogram from there starts with that template selected.
A pattern is a smaller piece of structure, such as a couple with twins. Open the Patterns panel in the editor, pick one, and click the canvas to place it. Patterns you save from a selection are listed there and under Genogram patterns on the dashboard.
Start from an example
To start from something pre-built, browse the genogram examples and open any one as a new genogram in your account to study or adapt, or pick one on the Examples tab of the New genogram dialog.
